For many years, I used to rent a portion of my warehouse to long haul truckers so they could do maintenance on their rigs while they were in town. Due to most truckers being annoying as hell, I eventually broke ties with all but one. Eventually he decided to retire, sold his trailer and rig, and started cleaning out the warehouse. But then he died from a stroke, possibly brought on by chain smoking for 50+ years. He didn’t quite have all of this stuff cleaned out before kicking on to the vast highway in the sky, and his kids had no interest in any of it. So I ended up inheriting half of a drum of gear oil, among other scrap
able items
.
I generally do my own gear oil changes, using Mobil 1 synthetic (which is the small plastic bottle on top of the drum). So now I’m wondering if I’ve inherited a lifetime’s supply of gear oil, or is this Delvac stuff different and more appropriate for a semi, not a pickup truck/SUV/RWD sedan. Did I hit the jackpot, or do I now have a bunch of oil to dispose of?

Sell little packets of it as gearhead potpourri!

Take this for what it’s worth but this is in the first review on Amazon (where it’s $52 a gallon) :
This is the perfect, Porsche Racing approved 6-speed manual transmission gear oil replacement for the no-longer-produced Shell SHC gear oil that came in the cars. It is actually factory Fill in 996 GT3 and 996 GT3
So I’d call that a win.

Sell it on craigslist. Someone with a diesel shop will probably pick it up. I don’t know how long it would take you to use it during the normal life of a car.
Does it degrade when exposed to oxygen? I mean over a decade or so.

I found
the data sheet
. Looks like it’s good stuff, but since it’s rated GL-5
I wouldn’t put it in my Miata’s transmission — the friction modifiers do weird things with the synchros and make shifts feel
notchy. OTOH,
50
0,000-mile change intervals ain’t nothin’ to sneeze at.

“You too can stank of gear oil!”

Awesome. I’ve got at least 6 differentials that could use this stuff.

A little Google-fu says that oil will degrade over time. Storing it in air tight plastic bottles and keeping it in a temperature controlled room will greatly increase its life. So looks like I have some work to do if I want to keep this stuff.

This trucker had about 1.5M miles on his truck, and it was far from worn out mechanically. He only put the best in/on it. I’m thinking this is a huge upgrade from Mobil 1.

Pour it down a storm drain. It’s not your problem, it’s somebody elses.

/s, obviously.

You can even sell the drum afterwards. They go for around $ 25. People like to use them as burn barrels.

Worth at least a few hundred bucks street value.

Even with the belated /s, my response was, "AHHHHHH, NOOOOOO!"

Lol, I would never advocate that. I take great care to ensure all my automotive fluids, metals and whatever else are properly recycled or disposed of

Does it smell like old farts stored in a jar? That or sulfur smell means it has oxidized.

The municipal oil disposal site is literally 3 blocks from my warehouse. I still accumulate 3-4 oil changes worth of oil before I run over there because I'm lazy. But it couldn't be more convenient when I do get off my dead ass.
